Chapter 01 · Championship Soccer 2026

Getting started

Install the game, find your way around the menus and choose the football world you want to play in.

Welcome to Championship Soccer 2026

Play the match yourself, follow the career of one footballer, or take charge from the touchline. Championship Soccer combines a football game on the pitch with a continuing world of clubs, players, competitions and managers. A single saved game can contain several people with different responsibilities.

This manual describes the current 2026 edition. Every match-control instruction refers to its analogue movement and separate passing, crossing and shooting actions. If you remember the Classic edition, begin with Controls: familiar buttons can now have different jobs.

You do not have to learn every department before your first match. Begin with a friendly, then choose a career role when you are comfortable moving, passing and defending.

Install, launch and update

  1. Download the 2026 game for your platform from your product account, or use the official updater offered with your purchase.
  2. For a Windows ZIP download, extract the complete archive into a permanent folder. Keep ChampionshipSoccer.exe, Data, Language and the other supplied folders together. Run the extracted game, rather than opening the executable inside the ZIP.
  3. Choose your language when asked. If activation is required, follow the product-key screen using the key supplied for this edition. Keep the key private.
  4. Open Options to check display, sound and storage choices. Start with the default match settings while you learn the controls.

Close the game before updating. Keep a separate copy of your saves, personal databases and any customised files. When updating manually, extract the complete new release into the intended installation, following the instructions supplied with that release. Starting an old shortcut can open an older copy even after you have downloaded an update.

Personal careers normally live outside the installation. See Saving and storage before moving to another computer, changing an installation or switching a Steam shortcut. The Steam Deck guide covers the Windows release through Proton.

Your first five minutes

  1. Choose Quick game, then Friendly match.
  2. Choose a home team and an away team. Use the country and division lists, top clubs or national teams to find them.
  3. Open Lineup and controls for the side you want to play. Assign your keyboard or controller to that team. A connected controller alone does not make you a participant.
  4. Check the setup's control summary. A side marked Computer-controlled has no whole-team human assignment, although an individual player may have a separate assignment.
  5. Choose Play match. On the default Xbox layout, use the left stick to move, A to pass, Y for a through ball, B to cross and X to shoot. Hold an action to prepare it and release to play the ball.
  6. Use Menu / Start or P to pause. Read the complete control guide before trying modifiers, first-time actions and defensive challenges.

For a first individual-player match, select a footballer who is already in the starting eleven. You control only that person, so the other players continue to make their own decisions.

Classic documentation may mention Network game and AI manipulation. They are not entries in the normal 2026 main menu. The shared-player instructions in this manual describe people playing on the same computer.

Using menus, lists and text fields

Use the pointer to select a button or a highlighted row. Many names are links: selecting a player opens his profile, selecting a club opens its information, and selecting a fixture or result opens the relevant match or competition view. Hover over a control to read its help text where available.

Long lists use a narrow vertical scrollbar. Scroll with the mouse wheel or drag its handle. Country, division, group and round selectors change which list you are viewing, so check the heading before assuming a club or player is missing.

Back returns to the previous screen. Most menu screens also accept right-click, Esc or Backspace. Text-entry and match screens give these keys their own meanings, so finish or cancel the active field or dialog first. In modern text fields you can select text and use the usual copy-and-paste shortcuts. A typed value is not necessarily accepted until you confirm the field or the screen.

Do not confuse Back, Cancel and an affirmative choice such as Apply, Continue or Save. On a warning, transfer offer or editing preview, read what the confirmation actually accepts.

Build a new football world

Start a new career to choose what your continuing world contains. The quick-start route uses a prepared world. Select database lets you select the football-world package and the country or competition files you want to include.

  1. Choose the supplied database or an installed custom package.
  2. Select the countries and divisions you want to follow. All selects the available files within the supported world limits. None clears the selection so you can make a smaller world.
  3. Include international competitions if you want the national-team and international competition content supplied by the package.
  4. Review the start year and the fantasy-player choice. The displayed start year determines the calendar used for dated player information. A package may suggest a year, and your saved preference may supply another. Choose deliberately when using a historical database.
  5. Review the world-size and performance estimates, then continue. If the importer reports issues, read the explanation before choosing whether to proceed.
  6. Complete the career rules and human-player setup. See Career roles for manager security, job opportunities and creating or choosing a footballer.

A career needs a playable domestic league selection. Quick Game also allows an international-only world. The two modes remember their league selections separately.

The world is created from the selection at the beginning. Loading a career restores that world's squads and history. Installing another package afterwards does not replace the teams in an existing save. See Custom football worlds for package installation.

Choose a world your computer can handle

A larger world gives you more teams, players and competitions to follow. It also takes more time to prepare each matchday, save progress and maintain years of history.

The database screen estimates memory at the start, after five seasons and after twenty seasons. It also allows for temporary peaks while playing, loading or saving. The system-memory recommendation adds room for the operating system and other programs. These are planning estimates, not a promise that every computer will behave identically.

The speed stars and estimated time describe work on the selected football world per matchday. They are useful when comparing a small league selection with a large one. They do not predict the duration of your own full match or how smoothly the stadium will draw.

If the estimate is high, deselect countries you do not need. If a memory warning appears during play, close unnecessary applications and follow its guidance. A warning that allows continuation leaves the choice with you. If a particular operation cannot proceed safely, return to the last usable screen and choose a smaller world or another save.

For a slow match with an otherwise manageable career, adjust graphics and display settings. Reducing the number of leagues and reducing graphics detail solve different kinds of waiting.

Several human profiles can share one career, at the same club or at different clubs. A profile's responsibilities and its input-device assignment are separate choices. Give each participant the intended device and check for assignment conflicts.

An individual footballer may start, sit on the bench or be left out of the match squad. The available match button reflects that situation. A manager may also begin without a job or found a club where the chosen division allows it. The full setup and subsequent career paths are explained in Career roles and the manager's job.

Find your way around the career hub

The hub brings together your current club or player, messages, offers and the next fixture. Begin each turn by reading new messages and checking the upcoming match. The opposing club and competition links help you inspect the fixture without losing your place.

Use Squad and tactics for selection and formation, My player for your own footballer, and the department buttons for training, youth, transfers, staff, finance and calendar. Your role determines which decisions you can make. You can still inspect information without having the authority to change it.

Continue to the next player hands the turn to the next human participant. Advancing a day moves the calendar one day, while continuing to the next event stops when something needs your attention. On matchday, choose whether to play, watch, join after a substitution or take the result according to the options shown.

Before an important decision, save under a recognisable name. After a match, read the statistics and messages before advancing. For a manager's first week, continue with Club management. For an individual footballer, read Career roles and Training and development.
