Chapter 12 · Early Access
Championship Soccer 2026 (3D)
The 2026 edition introduces a fully playable 3D match engine, freely analogue movement and separate buttons for passes, through balls, crosses and shots. This chapter explains the current 3D controls and the most important differences from the Classic edition.
2026 edition
What changes in the 3D version
The 2026 match controls are a new system. The Classic one-button instructions do not describe how the 3D edition plays.
Stay on this page for Championship Soccer 2026 (3D). If you are playing the 2D edition with eight-direction movement and one context action, use Classic controls instead.
| Area | What is new in 2026 (3D) |
|---|---|
| On the pitch | Fully playable 3D matches, unrestricted analogue movement and dedicated actions for a pass to feet, through ball, cross and shot. |
| Ball control | Separate close-control and sprint inputs, a short set-up touch, charged kick power, a loft modifier and directional aftertouch. |
| Careers | Live player-career feedback, coach trust, transfer and loan requests, signing recommendations and the option to progress towards player-manager duties. |
| Football world | More than 4,000 clubs and 80,000 footballers across over 70 countries, with expanded staff, scouting, contracts, loans, histories and AI manager identities. |
| Ways to play | Control one footballer or a whole team, play local couch co-op, use custom football worlds, or follow a match tactically when your career player starts on the bench. |
This chapter reflects the public Early Access behaviour verified on 21 September 2026. The 2026 edition is a playable Windows x64 release, but systems, labels and default values may continue to change; install current updates before diagnosing a difference from this guide.
Assigning a device and changing buttons
Device assignment and button mapping are two separate steps. Assigning tells the match which keyboard, mouse or controller belongs to a player or team. Mapping decides which button performs each action.
- Open Player Settings or the relevant control row. The current device may initially be shown as Keyboard.
- Choose Assign beside that device. Follow the prompt with the controller or other input you want that player or team to use.
- Open Button Mapping. Select an action and press the new key or button. If it was already assigned elsewhere, the new choice cleanly replaces the conflicting binding.
- Check every local player. In couch co-op, give each person the intended device before starting the match.
Custom gameplay mappings persist. A keyboard and mouse remain available as a fallback. Menus are currently designed primarily for the mouse, so successfully assigning a controller for the match does not mean that every menu can be navigated with that controller.
Return to the player or team row and confirm the device assignment first, then inspect Button Mapping. Remapping an action alone does not assign that controller to a participant.
Default Xbox controller layout
The table shows the current default layout. All match actions can be remapped, so the mapping screen is authoritative if you have changed a button.
| Input | Action | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Left stick | Move / aim | Move freely in any direction. During a kick or set piece, use it to aim and apply directional influence. |
| X | Shot on goal | Use near goal or whenever you intend a direct attempt rather than a pass. |
| Y | Through ball | Lead a team-mate by playing into the space ahead of the run. |
| A | Pass to feet | Play towards a team-mate’s current position for the safer receiving option. |
| B | Cross | Deliver across the pitch or into the penalty area. |
| LT | Slower running / close ball control | Reduce pace and keep the ball nearer while turning, shielding or preparing the next action. |
| LB | “Shift” / Lofted Ball modifier | Hold it together with a pass, cross or shot when you want a higher ball. |
| RT | Sprint | Accelerate into open space or chase the ball. |
| RB | Short set-up touch | Tap the ball a short distance to arrange your body for the following pass, cross or shot. |
On another controller, use the equivalent physical positions or identify the action by name in Button Mapping. Do not assume that the Classic edition’s primary action button has the same meaning here.
Kick power, loft and aftertouch
Choose the action first: A aims at feet, Y leads a run, B crosses and X shoots. You then shape that action with hold time, LB and direction. Think of LB as a “Shift” button: it modifies the chosen kick rather than performing a separate action by itself.
| Stage | Your input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Aim | Face the target or space with the left stick. | Sets the intended starting direction. |
| 2. Charge | Press and hold A, Y, B or X. | A longer hold adds power. Releasing performs the kick; at maximum charge the kick is performed automatically. |
| 3. Add height | Hold LB while passing, crossing or shooting. | Turns the chosen action into a lofted ball. |
| 4. Shape the flight | Give a brief directional input after the ball leaves the foot. | Sideways influence adds curve; input against the original kick raises the ball further. The effect depends on the player’s control and the Aftertouch setting. |
Tap A for a short pass to feet. Hold Y longer to send a stronger through ball into space. Hold LB with B, then add a small sideways influence after contact for a higher, bending cross.
More input is not always better. First establish aim and power, then add only the height or curve the situation needs. Strong aftertouch or a hard kick cannot fully compensate for poor balance, pressure or a difficult body angle.
Pace, close control and the set-up touch
Movement in the 3D edition is freely analogue rather than restricted to the Classic edition’s eight directions. The left stick also follows the current camera angle: if you rotate the view, the direction you press is interpreted from that new view.
- LT Close control
- Use in traffic, before a turn or while waiting for a passing lane. The footballer runs more slowly and keeps the ball closer.
- Normal movement
- Release both triggers for the balanced choice when you need control and useful forward pace.
- RT Sprint
- Use when there is grass to attack or an opponent to chase. Plan the next touch early because maximum pace is less suited to tight changes of direction.
- RB Set-up touch
- Nudge the ball into a cleaner striking position. This is useful when the ball is under the feet or the current body angle would make the next kick awkward.
A simple attacking rhythm is: receive without sprinting, use LT to settle or turn, tap RB if a cleaner angle is needed, then choose the correct pass or shot. Save RT for the space after the defender has been beaten.
Off the ball and defending
Receiving passes in a player career
There is currently no call-for-ball button. A computer-controlled team-mate decides whether to pass from your position, the opponents around you and the available lane. Stay onside, move into a clear straight or diagonal lane and avoid standing directly behind a defender. A remains the pass-to-feet action; it does not demand the ball from the AI.
Defensive actions
Defensive commands are contextual in the current Early Access build. When an opponent has the ball and you are close enough, the shot, through-ball and cross actions can attempt a tackle. Pass to feet is excluded from that tackle trigger. Approach under control and press deliberately; repeatedly holding a kick action while possession changes can produce an unintended challenge.
Positioning still matters more than the button alone. Close the route to goal, meet the ball carrier from a useful angle and leave enough distance to react to a pass or change of direction.
Throw-ins and free kicks
Throw-ins
Aim smoothly with the analogue stick and wait until the thrower is ready. The four face-button actions provide different distances and heights while retaining their normal intentions: a safer ball towards feet, a ball into space, a crossing-style delivery or a more direct long attempt. Read the intended receiver’s movement before committing.
Standing free kicks
Aim with the analogue stick; the chosen direction remains set when the stick returns to neutral. You may pass sideways or backwards instead of always attacking the goal. Hold the chosen action to build power and use LB when the free kick should be lofted. Direction after contact can then add lift or bend in the same way as an open-play kick.
Match, camera and replay keys
Gameplay actions can be remapped, but several match-management and replay helpers currently remain keyboard commands.
| Input | Current function |
|---|---|
| R | Open or leave the instant replay. |
| S | Toggle slow motion while the replay is running. |
| Enter / Num Enter | Save the current replay. |
| Insert / Delete | Rotate the experimental match camera in 45-degree steps. |
| Page Up / Page Down | Raise or lower progression speed while you are not actively playing on the pitch, for example from the bench or tactical view. |
| Space | Advance a skippable presentation, free-kick positioning or substitution stage. It does not skip live play. |
| F1 / F5 | Request home- or away-team substitution and manager actions where available. |
| Select / View | Controller route to the relevant substitution or manager action for the assigned side. |
After rotating with Insert or Delete, left-stick movement follows the new camera angle. Camera rotation is experimental and the chosen perspective is not currently retained as a saved preference.
Saved replays are stored under Documents\My Games\Championship Soccer\Replays. After the final whistle, the 2026 edition can also create a short or full match video; a shared video includes any saved replay sequence.
Player careers and match participation
A player career may put you in the starting line-up, on the bench or outside the eligible squad. The available match choice reflects that status.
| Choice or status | What happens |
|---|---|
| Play match | You take direct control when your footballer starts, or control the assigned team if that is your chosen role. |
| Play from the Bench | You follow the match in tactical view and take control immediately if the manager substitutes your eligible footballer onto the pitch. |
| Result Only | The game uses the simplified simulation. A starter participates in the simulated match; a substitute records an appearance only if the simulation brings him on. |
| Not eligible | The live bench option is not offered when the footballer is outside the match squad, suspended or otherwise unavailable. |
Performance now feeds into live match comments, between-match manager feedback and coach trust. As your standing grows, you can request a transfer or loan, recommend possible signings and eventually combine playing with manager responsibilities. Selection remains a manager decision: movement can invite a pass during a match, but there is no command that forces the coach to select or substitute you.
Career and football-world improvements
The 2026 edition expands both sides of Championship Soccer: playing the match and running the wider career.
- Staff and scouting: build a support team, find players and make decisions from fuller reports.
- Transfers and contracts: negotiations, loans and squad planning have been rebuilt for the new career.
- Managers and tactics: AI managers have identities and tactical preferences that shape their teams.
- History: match reports, archives, player and club records make a long-running world easier to follow.
- Local multiplayer: assign separate devices for couch co-op players before the fixture.
- Custom worlds and saves: community football worlds remain part of the game, while the modern save system includes recovery support and compatibility with supported Classic careers.
The general chapters in this manual remain useful for football concepts and data terminology, but a menu or workflow may differ in the 3D Early Access interface. Use this chapter whenever its instructions explicitly replace the Classic match controls.
Graphics, physics and gameplay options
Start with a graphics preset — Very Low, Low, Medium or High — then use Custom only when you need individual control. The advanced graphics page includes render resolution, anti-aliasing, outlines, sharpening, spectators, animation detail, shadows and nets.
If the whole match runs too quickly or slowly
Try the available Game Speed / Physics Update Rate modes: Compatible, Precise and Decoupled. Precise with a 60 Hz update rate is the current fresh-install starting point, but another mode may behave better on a particular system. Test each mode before changing several graphics options at once.
Options that change match feel
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| CPU sliding-tackle frequency | Changes how often computer-controlled opponents choose a sliding challenge. The current fresh-setting baseline is 25%. |
| Collision knockdown resistance | Changes how readily physical contact sends a footballer to the ground. |
| Ball size | Scales the visible ball from 70% to 100%; it does not change the ball’s physics. |
| Aftertouch | Sets the strength of your directional influence after a kick, from 0% to 100%. |
| Pitch wear | Adds optional visual wear to the playing surface. |
Choose Save on the options screen after making changes. Leaving the screen without saving can make a successful adjustment look as if it was ignored.
Troubleshooting, replays and updates
- Controller works in the match but not the menus
- This is expected in current builds. Use the mouse for menu navigation, then the assigned controller on the pitch.
- Controller is detected but controls the wrong participant
- Use Assign on the correct player or team row. Button Mapping changes actions but does not move device ownership.
- A diagonal plus an action sometimes fails on keyboard
- The keyboard may be blocking that physical key combination. Remap the action to Shift, Ctrl or another key, or test a controller; this distinguishes keyboard ghosting from a game-control problem.
- Movement feels wrong after changing the camera
- The controls are camera-relative. Return the view with Insert/Delete or take a moment to reorient the stick.
- An option has reverted
- Change it again and use the screen’s Save command before leaving.
Use the supplied Updater to install the latest build. Release notes and the current Windows download are available on the official Championship Soccer 2026 (3D) page. On Steam Deck, follow the Proton Updater guide or the manual update steps for an existing game shortcut.
